Chapter 10

Mandatory Fun

Meniran shifted in the full–‌length console seat, glancing impatiently out the viewport at the curve of the planet below. She called up a light mandala on the screen to distract herself, to seek calm. It was so irritating to be forced to a physical meeting instead of vir–‌sim! Security was a paramount concern—‌the Long Range Plan was so close to completion, and in danger—‌but acknowledging the necessity of the personal meetings made it no easier.

Her organization had done nothing that could have triggered the meeting. That was not even a possibility. There were disquieting rumors, disturbing snippets of information…‌no. She had planned very carefully, monitored every project under her responsibility—‌and a few that were not. Meniran had not reached the top echelon of Toren by trusting her peers without question.

Finally the private shuttle docked to the Hub ship. Meniran strode out, eager to get the meeting over with. She carried nothing; all secure data was already on the Hub and even she was not allowed to download private copies. Her assistants did not follow her past the Core Zone boundary. Security was paramount.

She scanned the room discreetly as she took her place at the table. Faces were tight, hardened against revealing any emotion that could be interpreted as failure—‌much like her own. Meniran was shocked, and the first icy wave of fear washed over her. Did they all know? No, that wasn’t possible. They weren’t all looking at her, either. But then…‌that meant there were other problems she hadn’t heard about, which was even more frightening.

The first to report was Security Services, the military wing. She knew about some of those issues, but wasn’t involved in any way that would reflect badly on her.

“Equipment and ships are proceeding as scheduled. The loss of the generated worker facility, which was to supply the main forces once the trial program had finished, has put the rest of the schedule at risk. If we do not rebuild the facility, another source must be found.”

“The generated soldiers were not part of the active phase of the Long Range Plan,” Bren Li, the Intelligence head, commented. “We can work around the loss for now.”

Lennox gave a short nod and continued. “There is a possible breach of secrecy related to the operation on Bone.” Meniran sat up. “All personnel and equipment involved were scrubbed of identification and data; however, several anomalies were discovered. Detailed investigation has been hampered by the need for continued secrecy, so the investigation is not complete. Wreckage was found of the primary vehicle in orbit. However, the surface transport vehicle is missing and no wreckage of any kind has been found that matches it. The entire landing team has been confirmed dead, with the exception of the contractor Kolpe Anders—‌no body was found. Strangely, a large number of witnesses from the Waylands facility are also missing, and we have been unable to determine where they have gone. Others mentioned a large cargo ship in orbit at the time that might have given them transport.
